Message Quality Indicator in Employee Recognition

In this article, you will learn how the Message Quality Indicator uses AI to evaluate recognition messages based on important quality factors—providing a numeric score along with helpful feedback and alerts to improve your messages.

To use the Message Quality Indicator feature in the application, it must first be enabled in the Admin Center under System Settings. For more details, please refer to the following article.

Structure of a Good Recognition Message

Before we explore how the Message Quality Indicator works, it’s helpful to understand what makes a great recognition message. Based on our experience in the rewards and recognition (R&R) space, here are the key elements:

1. Describe the Achievement with a Focus on Behaviors
Highlight what your colleague accomplished, but more importantly, emphasize how they did it—their actions, effort, and behavior.

2. Connect to Company Core Values
Show how the achievement reflects one or more of your company’s core values. This reinforces a shared culture and helps the employee see how they’re contributing to the bigger picture.

3. Celebrate a Range of Achievements
Recognize all types of contributions—successful project outcomes, solving unique challenges, showing positive behavior, earning certifications, or helping others grow.

4. Keep the Tone Balanced
Aim for a tone that’s genuine and respectful. Avoid going over-the-top with praise or making the message feel too basic or impersonal.

To access the MQI feature, follow the steps outlined below.

First, select a recognition program and recipients. On the 'Add message to recipient(s)' page, if your message’s quality score is below the required minimum, a Message Quality Indicator pop-up will appear.

If the message’s quality score is below the configured “Minimum Required” score, you won’t be able to send the message until you improve it—both the “Send Recognition” and “Proceed Anyway” buttons will be disabled, and an alert will prompt you to revise your message before continuing.

Key Components of an Effective Recognition Message

To elevate your recognition message from good to great, it helps to go beyond a simple “thank you.” Consider weaving in these essential components to create a message that feels thoughtful, personal, and unforgettable:

  • Behaviors – Make sure to mention which of the recipient's behaviors you admire!
  • Job Done – Make sure to mention what job has the recipient done successfully!
  • Examples – Make sure to support the job that the recipient has done by mentioning an example!
  • Uniqueness – Make sure to make this message unique by making it more personalized.

By layering these elements into your message, you ensure it doesn’t just recognize effort—it honors the full story behind it.

When MQI is enabled in other languages, the system first ensures that the message contains at least 50 characters, which is the minimum required for accurate language detection. You can find more details about this feature in the following article.

What makes this feature important is that the Message Quality Indicator helps transform every recognition message into something truly meaningful—even in languages other than the default language. It supports a culture of appreciation by ensuring your words genuinely reflect your colleagues’ efforts and impact.

With AI assistance, you can craft thoughtful and inspiring messages that go beyond simple praise—motivating and uplifting those around you.

If the message score is between the MQI alert threshold (e.g., 40%) and the Minimum Required Score (e.g., 30%), the user can still continue but will see a warning encouraging them to improve the message. The “Proceed Anyway” button stays active, allowing users to proceed while suggesting better quality.
