How to Support Deskless and Frontline Workers?

Explaining all the options that are available to support non-wired workers without company email address

In this article:

Deskless workers make up 70% of the global workforce, yet much of the conversation about employee experience in our industry focuses on office environments and workers who have online access and company email address.  Here we cover a comprehensive set of options we deploy with customers to support deskless employees in including them in the new company programs for recognition, feedback, communication and more.

The following options are available for environments with deskless workers that have some access to a private or company digital devices:

  • Use a mobile app or platform that allows for communication and recognition without the need for email. This can be our own mobile app (see details) that can be easily branded and distributed via link and QR code.  Also use a messaging and mobile app like Microsoft Teams, where we embed our solution and provide a chatbot.

  • Consider reuse of kiosks (could be as simple as a tablet), if they are available at the factories or headquarters at the employee’s fingertips.  On such kiosk device, we can deploy the full solution for access

  • Utilize large TV displays to show factory, region, or group-specific leaderboards and promote gamification

  • Use various forms of communication, such as posters or bulletin boards that our team will help to share information about the employee recognition program and to recognize the contributions of deskless workers

  • We can also support your employees with recognition via SMS text messages (additional pricing applies based on consumption)

The following options are for non-wired workers without access to email, kiosk or even personal smart phones:

  • Managers will be enabled to recognize, print and present recognition, feedback and anniversary certificates for their non-wired workers (see details).  Also we provide manager training and guidance to ensure that managers and supervisors are aware of the contributions of deskless workers.
  • Non-digital employees will be enabled to send recognitions to their peers with a physical approach using a “Kudos or Feedback Box”. We can also enable HR admins, managers and floor supervisors to assist the recognition flow through collecting and distributing the physical kudos or feedback cards to employees, as well as bulk upload them in the system (see details)
  • Events and raffles can be supported in the system where physical, scratch / points card are handed out (see details).  Organize and hold contests, events or celebrations where team members can receive or win points (scratch) cards.
  • Set up a recognition hotline by potentially reusing an existing employee shared service center.  Employees can call in to leave recognition messages for their colleagues, which can then be shared in the system with the rest of the team.
  • Create a program specifically for deskless workers. In order to better support and recognize the contributions of deskless workers, it may be helpful to create a recognition program specifically tailored to their needs. This can include identifying key performance indicators and rewards that are relevant to their roles and responsibilities, and ensuring that the program is accessible and easy to use.
Overall, it is important to consider the unique needs and communication preferences of deskless workers when designing a new employee experience program. By providing multiple ways for employees to participate in the new program, organizations can ensure that all workers feel valued and supported.

The main technical prerequisite for including deskless workers in the system are:

  • Their identity is registered and maintained in your Identity Management solution such as Microsoft Azure Active Directory (AD).  We need such security integration to be in place to authenticate and securely provide the access to the system.
  • It is also good to have correct and up-to-date organizational data about these deskless employees, typically managed and maintained in your HR core system.  So, we can also synchronize the additional employee and org data used in the recognition or feedback processes.
